Students at Fair Oaks Elementary have a new way to actively explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts, thanks to a grant provided by national nonprofit KaBOOM! and Target.
The Imagination Playground is an innovative play system that encourages creativity, communication and collaboration among students. With a collection of custom-designed, oversized blue foam parts, the Imagination Playground provides a changing array of elements that allow children to create a variety of spaces and structures that can be constantly built and rebuilt.
Anne Strootman, resource manager at Fair Oaks Elementary, said the Imagination Playground allows the school to continue fostering a culture of well-being for students. (Earlier this school year, Fair Oaks also received a grant to expand physical activity opportunities schoolwide and was recognized for its nutrition efforts.)
In addition to supporting health and wellness initiatives, Strootman said the Imagination Playground can also be used in classroom learning, during STEM family nights, and at other school events like the annual Every Kid Healthy Week. Fair Oaks students had the opportunity to explore the Imagination Playground during this year’s Every Kid Healthy Week in late April during their gym classes and at recess.
